I love reading graphic novels and comic books, and I’m definitely not alone. From kids just starting their reading experience to adults rediscovering storytelling in a new format, comics have exploded in popularity over the past decade. But despite that, there’s still a lingering misconception that comics aren’t “real reading,” or that they don’t build strong literacy skills. Comics are not only legitimate literature; they’re incredibly powerful for your brain.

Comics Are a Workout for Your Brain

Reading comics is a uniquely active experience. Unlike traditional novels, comics require readers to process both words and pictures at the same time. Your brain is constantly making connections by interpreting facial expressions, filling in action between panels and understanding how text and visuals work together to tell a story. This process strengthens so many important skills, including:

  • reading comprehension — readers must infer meaning from context, not just text
  • visual literacy — an essential skill in today’s image-heavy world
  • critical thinking — especially when interpreting subtle or symbolic artwork
  • memory and engagement — the combination of visuals and story helps information stick

Studies have shown that graphic novels can improve literacy outcomes, especially for reluctant readers or those who struggle with traditional text-heavy formats. If you take one thing away from this, I hope it’s this: comics make reading more accessible and more fun.

Breaking the “Not Real Reading” Myth

The idea that comics are somehow “less than” books has been around for ages. But today, graphic novels cover everything from memoir and history to science fiction and complex literary fiction. We love suggesting comics and graphic novels in the library because they:

  • build confidence in emerging readers
  • encourage lifelong reading habits
  • provide diverse and inclusive storytelling

Reading a graphic novel isn’t a shortcut; it’s just a different (and equally valuable) way of engaging with a story. Sometimes I find the exact type of story I'm looking for in graphic novel form when I haven’t been able to find it in print (for me, particularly, when it comes to adult horror stories).

Explore Our Graphic Novel Collection

At FVRL, our graphic novel (GX) collections are organized to make it easy for readers of all ages to find something they’ll love. They use three call numbers for different age groups, and they're shelved in appropriate areas of the library to avoid confusion:

  • Juvenile GX (JGX)
  • Teen GX (YAGX)
  • Adult GX (GX)
