I love reading, but even as a library professional, it sometimes takes me months to get back into it. We've all been there: unsure where to start, staring at a pile of unread books and feeling a strange guilt. Whether it’s the business of life or just a string of underwhelming reads, reading slumps happen to the best of us.

Often, a reading slump starts because we’re forcing ourselves to read what we think we should be reading — award winners, dense non-fiction, the latest viral novel. Remind yourself that reading is a joy, not a chore. Slumps are natural, and there’s no shame in taking a break.

When you're ready to ease back in, the library is the perfect place to do it — free of judgment, full of options, and made for readers at every stage of the journey.

Rediscover the Joy of Reading — At Your Library

At FVRL, we want you to explore without pressure or judgment. Walk into the library with no plan. Let your eyes wander. Browse our thoughtfully designed displays, guaranteed to inspire your next read. Pick up something just because the cover looks fun! Reconnecting with curiosity is often the first step to getting back on track.

And never underestimate the element of surprise! FVRL Grab & Go bags are filled with great books, preselected by genre to save you time — for example, sci-fi, mystery, fantasy or romance. Read one or read them all, then return them through the book drop as usual.

Switch It Up

Sometimes a change of format can spark a renewed interest in reading. If you usually read novels, try short stories, novellas, non-fiction or even a graphic novel. (They’re not just for kids!) Or try a new-to-you genre for a different reading experience.

If you usually read print, you may want to explore our extensive collection of digital books on FVRL OverDrive. The Libby app lets you read anytime on a digital device like a smartphone, tablet or eReader. The nice thing about having an ebook on your phone is that it’s always with you, wherever you go. Read a few pages while you’re on the bus or waiting in line at the supermarket.

Have you tried audiobooks? (Yes, they count as reading!) Sometimes, a skilled audiobook narrator can engage you in a way that regular books can’t. Put in your earbuds and press play while you’re on your daily walk, doing household chores or commuting to work, and see how quickly time passes!
